Plate frames that finish the car instead of advertising a dealership

Most cars leave the lot wearing a plastic frame with a dealer's name on it. It is free advertising that you paid for, and it is usually the last cheap-looking thing left on an otherwise sorted car.

These frames are cut from the same 3mm cast acrylic as our emblems, in your choice of text and finish. You can run your name, your club, a plate nickname, or nothing at all if you just want a clean border.

Frames, novelty plates, and which you need

• Frames surround your real, registered plate. They are legal in most states as long as they do not obscure the plate number, the state name or the registration stickers - check your own state's wording, because a few are strict about the top and bottom margins.
• Novelty front plates go where a front plate would sit, in the states that do not require one. If your state does require a front plate, a novelty plate is not a substitute for it.

Fit and mounting

Frames use the standard US plate bolt pattern and mount with the fasteners already on your car - no adhesive involved, so there is nothing to fail in the heat. Novelty plates mount the same way in a front bracket, or with tape on a smooth bumper blank.

Because the acrylic is rigid rather than flexible, check that your mounting surface is flat. Some bumper plate pockets are slightly dished, and a rigid plate bridging a dish will flex against the bolts over time.

Living with acrylic on the front of a car

The front plate area takes more abuse than any other panel: stone chips, bugs, road salt, brush contact in automatic washes. Acrylic handles all of it better than chromed plastic, which pits and then corrodes underneath. Wash it with normal car soap. Avoid dry-wiping it when it is covered in grit, and avoid solvent-based bug removers, which can haze the surface.
