Audi S line, S and RS Badges: What Each One Actually Means

Audi's performance badging is a three-step ladder that a lot of buyers get wrong, and the step people most often mistake is the one that appears on the most cars. S line is not a performance model. S is. RS is something else again.

Here is what each badge means, where the factory puts them, and what your options are if you want the badge in a color Audi never offered — which, judging by the fact that Google finishes "audi rs badge" with "black", is most people.

S line, S and RS

S line — a trim package

S line is an appearance and equipment package on ordinary Audis. Sportier bumpers, wheels, seats, sometimes a firmer suspension setup — but the engine underneath is the standard one. An A4 with the S line package is still an A4.

This matters because S line badges are the ones most often added by owners rather than by the factory, and they sit in different places: the front grille, the fenders, the door sills, the steering wheel. If you are shopping used, the badge tells you about the options list, not the drivetrain.

S — the warm one

S stands for Sport. S3, S4, S5, S6, S7, S8, SQ5 and the rest are genuinely faster cars with more power, bigger brakes and quattro as standard. They sit between the regular range and RS.

RS — RennSport

RS is RennSport, German for racing sport. These are built by what was quattro GmbH and is now Audi Sport GmbH, and they are a different proposition entirely — RS3, RS4, RS5, RS6, RS7, RS Q3, RS Q8. The RS badge is the one that carries weight on a forum, and the one owners are most protective of.

Where the badges go

• Rear tailgate. The model badge, usually bottom right, with the four rings centered above.
• Front grille. S line and RS badges sit in the grille surround or on the honeycomb itself. "Honeycomb grille" fitment is a genuinely different mounting problem from a flat surface.
• Front fenders. Common for S line on older cars.
• Brake calipers, steering wheel, door sills. Interior and detail branding on the S and RS cars.
• Engine designation, separately. Audi badges displacement and induction on the tailgate too — 2.0T, 3.0T, TFSI, TDI, V6, V8, V10, Biturbo.

Why owners change the color

Audi's own black optics packages have made chrome look dated on modern cars, and a chrome RS badge on a Nardo Grey car with black trim everywhere else is the last bright object on the panel. The usual responses are vinyl overlays, plasti dip, genuine black-optic badges where Audi offers them, and cut acrylic replacements.

What a mirror acrylic badge is

Laser cut from 3 mm cast acrylic and hand polished, with the mirror running through the full thickness of the sheet rather than sprayed on as a coating. A plated plastic badge scuffs back to a dull core at the edges and clouds after a couple of summers; a mirrored film delaminates. There is no coating here to lose.

Five finishes — yellow, red, pink, blue and green — at $55. On Mythos Black, Daytona Grey and Navarra Blue every finish reads as a bright accent. On Ibis White and Florett Silver the darker mirrors hold their color while the lighter ones can wash out at distance.

Buying more than one

Grille plus tailgate is the usual pair; add fenders and it is four. Set the quantity and pick the model for every piece separately, because a grille badge and a tailgate badge are rarely the same size. The quantity discount treats them as one run.

Fitting and removing

3M automotive tape is applied before it ships. Clean with isopropyl alcohol, peel, position, press for thirty seconds. No drilling.

One Audi-specific note: honeycomb grilles

A grille badge on RS models often clips through the mesh rather than sticking to a flat face. Tape needs a continuous flat surface to bond to, so on an open honeycomb the badge wants a backing plate or the original clip carrier. Check what your car actually uses before assuming a stick-on will work there — tailgate and fender placements have no such problem.

Can I put an RS badge on an S line car?

Nothing stops you physically. Whether you want to is a different question, and the answer on any Audi forum is loud. The badge changes nothing mechanical.

Will it affect resale?

Keep the original and refit it before selling — these lift off with fishing line and gentle heat, so it is a ten-minute job.

Is the badge the same size across models?

No. Grille, fender and tailgate badges differ, and sizes change between generations. That is exactly why the model selector is there.
