Character badges, and how to keep them from looking cheap

Pop-culture badging has a bad reputation, and it is usually earned by execution rather than by the idea. A printed vinyl decal of a character fades to pastel in two summers and peels from the corners. That is what people picture when they hear the phrase.

These are cut from 3mm cast acrylic in layers, with the color in the material and UV-stable pigment. The shape is physical, not printed, so it throws a shadow and holds an edge. It reads as a made object rather than a sticker, which is most of the difference.

Size restraint matters more here than anywhere

One character badge on a car looks like a choice. Three looks like a bumper covered in stickers. If you want more than one, put them on opposite sides of the car rather than clustering them on one panel.

Smaller is also generally better with character designs. Six or eight inches on a fender reads as a detail someone notices when they walk past. Twelve inches on a door reads as a wrap.

Where to mount

Front fender behind the wheel arch, lower door below the crease, or the boot lid. Avoid textured bumper covers and cladding - the tape needs a smooth sealed surface. Clean with isopropyl, peel, position, press for thirty seconds.

Not finding the one you want

The builder cuts custom text rather than custom artwork, so it will not reproduce a character we do not already carry. What it will do is cut a name, a quote or a call sign in ten fonts, which for a lot of people is the version that ages better anyway.
